Why the Module?

Raising awareness about how AI systems involve with our daily lives and routines underlies how important AI already is in our lives.

What will it cover?

  • Daily routine scenarios in which AI take place in our conscious decisions
  • Daily routine scenarios in which AI take place in our subconscious behavior
  • Less frequent and critical cases involving AI

Our modern lives are characterized by an absolutely overwhelming amount of data. Just think about all the apps you use on a daily basis! Because of this data overload, one of the most common uses of AI is to help us find things, or to find recommendations. Think about Google Maps, your social media feed, dating apps, or even your career choices. Even if you have never used ChatGPT, you probably interact with AI every single day, and you’ve almost certainly fed your data into an AI!

AI is so pervasive that it would be hard to try and avoid it. One of the ways in which you can try to understand how reliant we already are on AI is by not using your smartphone for 24 hours. Do you think you can do that? Or if you can’t, try to imagine what a day would look like, it’s probably very different from what your normal day looks like.

Study Room

The goal of this study room is to raise awareness about how AI systems are involved with our daily lives.

Check out this article about 10 most common ways in which you already use AI. It is about the ways in which you already make use of AI.  It will make very clear what you would need to give up in order to avoid AI.

The following blog article explores the pervasive presence of AI in our daily life, uncovering the different applications, implications, and societal impacts of AI technologies across different domains.

Check out this article on Caltech Science Exchange which discusses the uses and implications of AI in everyday life!

Activity Room

Have a look at the image below. It depicts a household on a normal day with many activities happening around the house. Does this remind you of what goes on in your own home?

In the image, try to identify different parts of the house and the activities taking place where AI might be used. Make a list of what you’ve noted and then click to reveal the second image which will show you where AI is being used to run these daily tasks around the house.

  1. Form groups of 3-4 people each. This can be a group of classmates, family or friends.
  2. Carry out this hunt in your classroom, community park, home, or mall.
  3. Spread out and observe everything around you for 30 minutes.
  4. Make a list of everyday products and activities around you that use AI. Make sure you have had a look at the reading material provided to you in the Study Room.
  5. At the end of 30 minutes, all groups will meet and compare their lists.
  6. Ask yourselves the following questions?
    • Who had the most number of items on their list?
    • Were any items the subject of debate, as to whether AI was being used in that activity or product or not?
    • What aspect of the space that you explored could soon be using AI?

Reflection Room

Do you think smartphones = AI?

How do you try to make sense of the data-intensive world?

Are there any downsides you can think of with having all this AI?
